WELCOME TO THE MOVING SCHOOLS AWARD The European Physical Activity Label for Schools

BACKGROUND

Europe and indeed the rest of the world, is facing a physical inactivity crisis. This worrying trend will have a negative impact on their long-term health and wellbeing.

That’s why the European Union is motivating all member states and beyond to emphasise the importance of quality physical activity, physical education and school sport so that young people have the opportunity to be physically active during and beyond the school day, every day.

Moreover, that’s why the Moving Schools Award has been developed to recognise schools which are addressing the problems of physical inactivity by improving the quality and quantity of their offer to students.

Why your school should apply

This pan European Award aims to unite schools across all 28 member states and beyond in one movement to promote and recognise the importance of providing high quality physical activity, physical education and school sport for all their students.

There are many reasons why your school should apply:

  • To improve the quality and quantity of your physical activity, physical education and sport programmes.
  • To help you reflect on your current provision for young people.
  • To increase participation of your students in physical activity, physical education and sport programmes.
  • To promote the inclusion of all children and young people.
  • To benchmark your provision and progress against other schools in your country and across Europe.
  • To share best practice across the network of schools.
  • To identify areas for development and improvement.
  • To celebrate and recognise success.

What is the Award?

The Award is for schools to be able to recognise and celebrate their achievements in physical activity, physical education and school sport. It is gained through an online self-assessment process. The first step is for schools to register on the website to take part. By registering schools become part of the Moving Schools Award network.

It consists of two phases.

  • Phase one is a checklist of readiness factors to assess if schools are ready to apply for the Award. Schools which have all readiness factors in place may go on to the second phase. There are 28 questions relating to the three dimensions in phase one of:
    • physical activity,
    • physical education and
    • school sport.
Schools must be able to answer YES to every question in order to proceed to phase two. Schools requiring areas for development will be signposted to advice and information to enable them to address these areas.
  • Phase two is an online self-assessment process with three levels of Award: bronze, silver and gold. In order to achieve the Award at phase two, schools will be required to upload evidence to support their self-assessment.

BRONZE

In order to achieve the bronze award schools must

  • Answer YES and provide evidence for all questions identified as essential in all three dimensions

SILVER

In order to achieve the silver award schools must

  • Answer YES and provide evidence for all questions identified as essential in all three dimensions
  • Plus be able to answer YES to all but one question identified as desirable in at least one dimension of the school’s choice

  • Answer YES and provide evidence for all questions identified as essential in all three dimensions
  • Plus be able to answer YES to all but one question identified as desirable in each of the three dimensions
